Archive of the auction 56 – Karel Malich (*1924)
Karel Malich (*1924)
WALL SCULPTURE NO. 37. 2011. Exemplar no. 1/6, mixed media, steel, plywood, powdered colour. With certificate of authenticity by Karel Malich. Provenance: Collection of a Czech diplomat and an important collector of art.
In the 1960‘s Malich began to simplify his works and created monochrome reliefs in black, white and grey. After the mid-1960‘s, he created a number of objects examining the possibilities of displaying crossing of space, lines and energetic areas. These objects are close to constructivist tendencies, but his works are specific because they do not originate primarily from the rational concept, but they are often connected to artist‘s personal experiences and are often a reflection of the landscape, artist‘s important inspirational source. Later, he moves from the surface to the free space, starting to create wire objects. Karel Malich studied Graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, was a member of artistic group Křižovatka and Hollar Association of Czech Graphic Artists. His works are represented in many important galleries such as Centre Pompidou in Paris, Museu d‘Art et d‘Histoire in Geneva or Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
